People have this notion that confidences are always offered up sotto voce. That anything worth knowing will, for their convenience, be preceded by the words “don’t tell anyone I said this, but…” Secrets, shameful, tragic, humiliating though they may be—we’ve come to believe they should be accompanied by fanfare.

I’ve told you my secrets. That’s the secret.
